Description
I created this portrait in my studio as part of a long term series where I show children in slightly grown up situations. The boy in the picture is my son, a little over one year old. It captures the moment when he still drinks milk but no longer wants the bottle and reaches for the glass instead. At first glance it is a small detail, but for me it is his first visible decision and a clear sign of his own will. The styling as a little gentleman with cap and bow tie is deliberate. I want to suggest that children are not just a cute motif, but small personalities with their own opinions, limits and moments when they start to decide for themselves. I chose simple studio lighting and a calm composition so that the viewer attention stays on his eyes, the gesture of the hand and the quiet contrast between his young age and the adult role he seems to step into for a brief moment.
